Here's a little bit about Bellingham Baby Co from Shelly, its founder:
My husband and I moved to Bellingham in 2004, after the birth of our daughter, Kate. We wanted to leave the fast pace of our previous corporate jobs and focus on raising her in this beautiful, family-friendly community. After 25+ years in the retail field, I thought I was ready to leave all that behind.
Then I heard about this great product—the shopping cart cover—but couldn’t find any in fun, contemporary patterns. So I started sewing my own version of them in my living room and selling them on ebay.
At that time, I was one of the few people offering patterns other than ducks and dinosaurs. They were a hit, so I started my own website and began to have them made professionally. The website, launched in 2005, is called Kangaroodle.com, and now offers nearly 2,000 products.
When local people discovered our website, they would call to see if we had a store. Since we didn’t, they would often come by our house to pick up their orders. We decided that it was time for a store! Bellingham Baby Company opened in March of 2008.
Our philosophy at BBC is to support products that are 1) handmade by moms, 2) invented by moms or 3) from mom-run companies. Most of our products follow these guidelines and we are moving towards following this exclusively.
Over the past few years, I discovered most of our mom-made products by networking on the Internet. We feature a wide variety of mom-made items, everything from birth announcements to uniquely-designed onesies to leather booties.
When selecting products, I look for items that are functional, unique and, of course, safe for baby. Bellingham customers told us right away that they were interested in organic baby products, so we created a section with some great products made with organic materials. And I love products that are made from re-purposed material!
Shelly is generously offering one of my readers a $50 gift card to Bellingham Baby Company!! To enter, the rules are simple:
